May 2010 Newsletter Tour a college during Private College Week Students and families are invited to tour Wisconsin's private colleges and universities during Wisconsin Private College Week 2010 from July 12-17, 2010. During this "open house" week, learn more about Wisconsin's 20 private nonprofit colleges and universities. Call ahead to any campus and reserve your space. During Private College Week, you'll receive a waiver of application fees at each campus you visit! http://www.privatecollegeweek.com/ Summer is a great time to prepare for college. Summer break is nearing and that means a well earned break from the traditional schedule of school, homework, and a structured routine. Take some time to relax, but also use this time to do some college planning activities to lay the groundwork for your upcoming school year. Here's a list broken down by grade level to get you started thinking about ways you can plan your future while you're on break! For all grade levels remember to put together a well-rounded reading list to include history, classic literature, and newspapers. Grades 7 and 8 It is not too early to begin exploring careers. Think about what you love to do and begin thinking about careers that involve your interests. Here are some tips to get you started: -research careers online and at the library -talk to your parents about career choices -find a cause you like and volunteer College testing preparation should begin early so you can be ready for what is to come and feel confident on test day. College preparation coursework and exam preparation will be the key to your success. Use some time during the summer for the following activities: -if you are going into 8th grade, research the EXPLORE exam at www.actstudent.org -map out your course plan for the coming school years Grade 9 As you prepare for your first year in high school, take some time to define your direction during the next four years. You can start by researching careers and learning about the education requirements for careers of interest. Here are some ways to begin: -research careers online and at library -check out the Occupational Outlook Handbook at your library or online at http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos041.htm -talk to your parents about career choices -if you find a career which really interests you, ask someone in that profession if you can job shadow -find a cause you like and volunteer -find an internship If you have found some careers of interest, research majors that will help you reach your career goals. One website that will help you is www.collegeboard.com. Take some time to do some true exploration so you don't limit yourself. Use your summer to plan for college testing: -Research and sign up for the EXPLORE exam at www.actstudent.org -Take some time on a regular basis to prepare for the test by practicing test questions and reviewing your answers Grade 10 This summer use some of your free time to ensure you are on the way to great college career. Here are some activities to get you started: Explore careers: -Set up job shadow opportunities through your parents, neighbors, and friends -Plan school visits for the fall Plan for Colleges Testing: -Research and take the PLAN Exam at www.actstudent.org -Research the PSAT Exam at www.collegeboard.com Grade 11 The coming school year will be a busy one filled with college preparation exams, school visits, and college selection. Gets a head start on your college planning activities this summer with these activities: -Set up job shadow opportunities through your parents, neighbors, and friends. -Schedule SAT and ACT preparation time each week -Plan school visits for the fall -Communicate with colleges that interest you and ask for more information Grade 12 Congratulations you are almost a senior! Use the summer to prepare a college application file and a calendar of deadlines. Preparing this piece ahead of time will help you organize and save time during your busy school year. Here are some other items to complete over your summer break: -Prepare for fall college visits and any SAT/ACT exams scheduled -Continue with your extracurricular activities -Sign up for enrichment courses through your school or at a nearby college Have a great summer!
